In the UK, 44% of teachers plan to quit by 2027. Considering there’s already a shortage of teachers in certain subjects, it’s safe to say that this profession is in demand.
If you’ve always wanted to live in the UK, then this can be the perfect opportunity! Not only can you explore the nation, but you can also earn decent money in a fulfilling career too.
However, you can’t just pick up and start teaching in the UK. There are certain things you need to know and do beforehand so you’re prepared.
Here’s what you should know about becoming a teacher across the pond.
You’ll Need a Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
Getting a QTS is a must, even if you’re a certified American teacher already. Without it, it’s pretty much impossible to get a teaching job in the UK.
There are a few options here. First, you can enroll in a British program that guarantees a QTS. For example, you can try the Department for Education (DfE), although this will take a lot of time and money to do.
You can also try British government websites and submit applications. If you fit their criteria, then you’ll get a QTS.
Applying Directly to Schools Isn’t Effective
Once you have a QTS, you might think the next step is to apply directly to schools. However, this isn’t an effective way to get a job!
There are 3 obstacles here: most schools don’t accept resumes, they’ll want you to provide references, and you’ll need a sponsor.
A better route to take is using a reputable agency. What’s great is they’re free to use and they’ll connect you with schools that need your services, such as the LEAD Academy.
Expect Video Chat Interviews
School in England won’t pay for you to fly over, interview, then fly home. They’ll conduct video chat interviews, so familiarize yourself with the programs used, such as Skype, Google Hangouts, and Zoom. Not only that, but also set up your office to look pristine to make the best impression possible.
Know the School Timelines
Education in England runs on a different timeline than in the US. They have 3 terms: the first runs from September to December, the second runs from January to early April, and the third runs from late April to late July.
Also, in the US, we have elementary school, middle school, high school, and university/college. But in the UK, they have primary school, secondary school, college/6th form, then university. Students attend college from ages 16 to 18, so don’t confuse it with American colleges.
